Kimanzi hails youthful defensive duo

Despite going down by a solitary goal to Posta Rangers in a Round 5 league match played on Monday 17 April at the Thika Stadium, head coach Francis Kimanzi has reserved praise for the pairing of Andrew "Roma" Juma and Lennox Ogutu.

The duo, who last played together in a competitive match during the April edition of the 2016 KPL Under 20 tournament, were fielded at the heart of defence against Posta Rangers after skipper George "Wise" Owino was handed a holding midfield role ahead fo the back four.

Dennis Mukaisi's goal at the quarter hour mark was perhaps the only blemish to a fine display from the youngsters who Kimanzi described as the future of Mathare United's defence.

Good defending

"It is encouraging to see young players defend so well against very experienced players like (Dennis) Mukaisi and (Geoffrey) Kataka. They gave them very little time on the ball and they closed them down very well. I think they did very well and as a coach I am happy to see them coming up very well as a relaible partnership," observed Kimanzi.

On the narrow defeat to Sammy "Pamzo" Omollo's charges, Kimanzi believes that the early goal changed the complexion of the game adding that with better officiating he would have gotten something from that game.

"We conceded very early and Posta Rangers is an experienced side that is very organised defensively. They have very experienced players and that made it very difficult for us to score once we went down. I think the referee also played a part because she denied many 50-50 balls especially in prime positions," remarked Kimanzi.
