Nyakeya Eyes Golden Boot

Cliff Nyakeya celebrates his opener in the 2-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz at the Kenyatta Stadium on Saturday, September 1, 2018.

Mathare United forward Cliff Nyakeya is eager to launch a late pursuit for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Golden Boot as the league enters the last five rounds this weekend.

Nyakeya was called up to the national team for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ghana and the friendly against Malawi during the international break. Although he did not feature in both matches, he gained a lot in camp.

“I was disappointed not to play but it was a good experience altogether to train with big players like (Michael) Olunga and Calabar (David Owino). I learnt a lot from them,” offered the youngster.

His goal against Kakamega Homeboyz last time out took his tally to 10 for the season and the youngster has now set his sights on contesting for the Golden Boot which looks set to be won by Elvis Rupia who has 15 goals.

Within reach

“I had set a target of 10 goals at the beginning of the season but now that I have achieved it I want to aim higher. The Golden Boot is within reach and with five games to go I can get it,” asserted Nyakeya.

Mathare United last won at the Chemelil Sugar Complex in September 2009 but Nyakeya believes they can complete a double over the Millers having won the first leg 1-0.

Back to back wins

“Confidence is high after our last win because we won convincingly and also kept a clean sheet. It’s been long since we won matches back to back, we will going for maximum points,” he added.

Victory for the Slum Boys will see them move to within three points of fourth placed Sofapaka who are 47 points.
