Ochieng' chuffed at Harambee Stars call up
Chris Ochieng’ has expressed his delight at the call-up to the national team for the upcoming FIFA international friendly match against Mozambique set to be played in Maputo on Saturday 2 September.
Ochieng’, who joined the club in January 2017 after impressing during a two week trial, has received the nod from Harambee Stars head coach Stanley Okumbi who is said to be a big admirer of the forward.
This will come as a reprieve for Ochieng’ who only missed out on a place in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) select side that recently toured Spain for two friendly matches against Cordoba and Sevilla Atletico due to lack of travel documents.
“It’s (the call up) really humbling for lack of a better word. At the beginning of the year I decided to return to active football after sitting out for two years and that is how I came for trials here at Mathare United. The journey has not been easy because there has been a lot of pressure but that has worked to my advantage,” said the Law student at the University of Nairobi.
Having made it to the National team, Ochieng’ is not resting on his laurels. The 22 year old, who dedicates the call-up to his aunt, is keen on continuing his learning curve at Harambee Stars.
“There are many good players in my position at the national team but I want to continue with the hard work that I have been putting here at the club. If it worked here then I know it can also work at the national team,” added Ochieng’
In a crowded department that also has KPL top scorer Stephen Waruru, Ochieng’ will battle it out for a place in the travelling party with Kepha Aswani, Masud Juma and Joe Waithira.
