Salim praises Mathare’s young core after Sharks win
After seeing his charges produce a stunning display to win the Slum Derby against Kariobangi Sharks on Sunday, head coach Salim Ali has singled out youngsters for special praise.
Mathare United won 2-1 at the MISC, Kasarani thanks to goals from Captain Kevin Kimani and Daniel Otieno and though the whole squad worked tirelessly for the win it is the likes of new signing Dani Lual, Tyson Otieno and Marvin Ongori who Salim noted showed maturity beyond their years.
“It was a special win on Sunday and I must congratulate my players for giving their all. We played with purpose and that is what you want from a Mathare United team,” Salim said.
“The young players showed a lot of maturity. They kept calm in a game which is mostly more than just getting the three points. For a player like Lual who is still in his teens to play like that you cannot be any more proud. That also goes for Tyson and even Marvin who this season have shown significant improvement.”
First start for Lual
South Sudanese national Lual, who was signed at the start of the season, was making his first start for the team on Sunday in only his second appearance and he led the line well holding up playing and allowing the other offensive players to assume attacking positions. Tyson on his part provided the assist for Otieno's winner.
Salim, who now has his team in 10th place on the KPL standings with 24 points, has challenged his charges to maintain a consistent positive streak during the second leg.
“We have been a bit inconsistent and have struggled to string up wins in our recent games. I hope this win pushes us in the direction we need to be mentally. The season is still very far from being concluded and I believe we can be at the top with the leading pack. So I challenge my players to work extra hard now in the second leg,” he said.
United will now have a 17-day break before taking to the pitch again on January 29 against Zoo FC in Kericho.
