Van Persie debut goal downs Gor in Machakos

The lads celebrating Daniel Otieno's goal against Gor Mahia on November 6 2019

Daniel Van Persie Otieno came off the bench at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Wednesday to score the all-important goal that granted us a 1-0 win over Gor Mahia in a rescheduled KPL round 7 tie.

The winger scored with a minute left of the 90, connecting perfectly with a pinpoint corner delivery from Kevin Kimani to glance in a header that first struck the inside of the crossbar before beating Gor custodian Robert Mapigano.

The goal is his first for the club and comes just days after he earned his first start of the season in the draw against Posta Rangers on Friday.

Plenty of chances

Before the goal though, Salim Ali’s charges had curved out enough clear cut chances to be well out of sight but mistimed runs and great goalkeeping from the Gor custodian kept the scores level.

In one instance, James Kinyanjui had the ball in the back of the net with a rare header only for the attempt to be ruled offside.

The win, which is our third of the season, maintains our unbeaten start to the campaign and also lifts us up three places on the standings to 6th with 14 points, tied with two other teams and just two points adrift of top spot.

Next up is an away tie against Sony Sugar on Sunday.
