Van Persie: I hope Gor goal is the start of many
Danie Otieno grabbed his first goal in Mathare United colours on Wednesday when he came off the bench to hand us a 1-0 win over Gor Mahia and the winger is hoping that the goal is the start of many at the club.
“I am super excited to have scored my first goal for the club, even more so because it secured for us the win against a tough opponent,” Otieno, popularly referred to as Van Persie by his peers enthused.
“The feeling is like no other and I hope that this is the start of many for this club.”
Introduced for John Mwangi with almost an hour gone at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Otieno looked lively leading up to his goal which he scored with a well-placed header from a corner that struck the inside of the crossbar before going in.
It came in his fourth appearance and just days after he earned his first start in the draw against Posta Rangers, a game that he received plenty of praise from his coach.
It has taken him a while to get going but the goal has given him the confidence to force his way and be a regular in Coach Salim’s squad.
“Switching clubs is not an easy thing for a player and I have had those struggles. Mathare play a different style of play that takes time for one to grasp but I am getting there.
“The plan is to be a starter but I am happy with however the coach wants to use me either if it’s from the bench or from the start. I have settled in nicely with the more experienced players like Kevin Kimani and Roy Okal aiding in my transition and I feel completely at home here,” the former Sony Sugar man said.
Up next for Salim’s charges is an away tie to Sony Sugar on Sunday and what other perfect way for Otieno to add onto his tally than against his former team.
