Mathare United skipper George “Wise” Owino has been ruled out of the top of the table clash against Gor Mahia slated for Sunday at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Wise, the 2017 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Defender of the year, limped out of the 1-0 loss to Wazito last time out with a toe injury.

Further tests by the medical team revealed that he has a fracture on his fifth metatarsal that will keep him out for approximately a month.

“He has a fracture that will take approximately three weeks to heal. He should be back in a month’s time,” confirmed senior physiotherapist Wycliffe Omom.

While expressing his disappointment at the recent setback that will keep him out of action until late May, Wise has tipped his understudies Andrew Juma, Lennox Ogutu and Gilbert Osonga to step up.

Able replacements

“I am disappointed because I always want to be there to lead from the front and fight for the team. However this is part of football and I believe we have able replacements within the group. They are young players but very talented. I believe they will do a good job in my absence,” said the 37 year old in mitigation.

Having lost two matches in a row, Wise has tipped the boys to bounce back to winning ways and make a big statement with a win over the defending champions.

“We have put the losses behind us and we are motivated to rekindle our good start to the season. We cannot afford to lose against Gor Mahia,” assert the former Kenyan international.
